What to expect when looking for your first psychologist

Calling up and booking your first appointment can be challenging, especially if one doesn’t know what to expect. We hope this can answer a few of those questions you might have.

Do I need a referral to book in?

No, as we are a private clinic you are welcome to book in without a referral. However, referrals can be a good resource for you and your psychologist to have. It can also serve to assist communication with your GP and to ensure they remain updated with your care. Referrals are only required if you want to claim on Medicare for your appointments; they will be accompanied by a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). If you are not sure whether you would be eligible for a referral/MHCP it is good to chat with you GP and explore the option with them.

Which psychologist will I be booked in with?

This can come down to numerous factors:

  • Recommendation of certain clinicians by their GP or family/friend
  • If you are looking for support in specific areas (i.e. perinatal health, trauma, etc.)
  • You can have no preference and our admin team will help guide you in your choice
  • You can book in the first appointment available
  • If you have researched a specific psychologist you can ask for this clinician

The Admin team is here to discuss what we can offer at CCP and will do their best to match our psychologists to your needs. They will be able to direct you to someone suitable or help in making the decision. Refer to the following link for more information: https://ccp.net.au/

Do I have to share my full mental health history with the Admin team?

No, the Admin team will usually ask for a brief description of your presenting issue(s) and/or motivation for booking in to see a psychologist. This is so they can best judge which clinician may be most suitable and able to support your needs. Information expressed to the Admin team will only be shared with the psychologist you choose to book in. There is no pressure to share anything you are not comfortable with.

What do I need for the intake call?

The initial call needed to organise a booking can take up to 10 minutes, but is often shorter. Calls will go faster the more prepared you are, it may be helpful to be ready with your:

  • Referral (if applicable)
  • Medicare card details (if applicable)
  • Preferred payment method (i.e. credit/debit card)

We collect all your information over the phone to set up your complete file. This means that you will not be asked to fill out a long form before your initial appointment and do not have to worry that you’ve forgotten anything.
