What is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition typically caused by experiencing or witnessing a distressing or terrifying event. People living with PTSD may show signs of depression, anxiety, have difficulty sleeping, feel emotionally numb or show a loss on interest in activities they once loved. In many cases, everyday experiences may begin to ‘trigger’ the person into remembering the distressing event, causing them to have an intense emotional and physiological response.

How does PTSD therapy work?

While PTSD is an extremely difficult mental health condition to live with, the good news is that it can be treated. While the right approach differs from person to person, PTSD treatment can include psychological therapy from an experienced psychologist, medication or a combination of both. Exercise, mindfulness strategies and self-help techniques are also commonly taught to help PTSD sufferers manage their symptoms.

Here at the Centre for Clinical Psychology, we have a team of PTSD therapists who can help you overcome the burden of past trauma. Using evidence-based therapy, we work to help you manage the symptoms of PTSD in your everyday life so you can begin to move forward. Each of our PTSD counsellors and psychologists are highly trained and experienced in this area of mental health, so you can have confidence knowing that you’re getting trusted and reputable treatment.

Can you benefit from complex PTSD counselling?

It’s normal to feel scared, distressed or shaken up after experiencing a traumatic event. However, if these symptoms last more than a few months, you may be experiencing PTSD. In particular, if you are finding that your thoughts and emotions about the event are disrupting your day-to-day life, it’s important to seek help.

Some common symptoms of PTSD include:

  • Depression or anxiety.
  • Substance abuse.
  • Feelings of hopelessness or despair.
  • Experiencing flashbacks about the traumatic event.
  • Increased agitation and hyperawareness.
