Information for Referrers about CPT
Hear from our team
CPT is a first-line treatment for PTSD. It is listed in the Australian PTSD Guidelines, the US National Centre for PTSD Guidelines and NICE Guidelines, and others.
CPT is as effective as EMDR and prolonged exposure (Wright et. al., 2024)
CPT is based on CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and it often improves co-occurring mental health issues including depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and substance use (Resick, et. al., 2024).
ABOUT CPT
CPT is typically 12 sessions, but can vary depending on a range of factors. Research shows that some people need as few as 9 sessions, others need more (Galovski, et. al.2012). An average CPT session is 50-60 minutes long. It is recommended clients attend once or twice a week. CPT can also be completed intensively over a one or two week period.
