What to do if you see your psychologist outside of the therapy room

Finding the right psychologist is a journey of trust and growth, and many of us build meaningful relationships with our therapists over time. But what happens if you unexpectedly bump into your psychologist outside of the therapy room? Whether you’re at the supermarket, in a pilates class, or at the pub, seeing your psychologist in the “real world” can feel awkward or uncertain. So, how should you handle the situation with ease and respect for your therapeutic relationship?

Here’s what to do when you see your psychologist outside of your sessions:

1. Know That It’s Normal to Feel Awkward

Seeing your psychologist outside of their usual office setting can naturally bring up feelings of awkwardness or curiosity. A therapeutic relationship is unique, in that they know about your inner world, but you don’t know much, if anything, about theirs. Seeing your psychologist outside of the professional space may momentarily throw you off balance, and this is normal and okay.

2. Acknowledge the Encounter if You Wish

If you see your psychologist in public, you can choose to say hello or not acknowledge them at all – it is up to you. If you run into your psychologist on the street, they will likely wait for you to initiate recognition. Your psychologist will follow your lead so as to protect your privacy and confidentiality. You may be with someone who doesn’t know about your therapy, like a family member, new date, or boss, and if the psychologist says hello first, they may reveal that you are a therapy client without your consent.

3. The Boundaries of the Professional Relationship are Unique

Your therapy sessions are private, professional, and intentional. When you see your psychologist outside of the office they have that in mind. While you may feel comfortable talking with them, they will be considering your privacy and the confidentiality that goes with that. They may be aware of who might see you talking to them, as well as who may hear what you are saying.

4. A Psychologists Personal Space

When a psychologist is outside of their consulting room they are not in a “psychologist’s mode”. They will be involved in all the activities of daily living that humans do. It might be that they are with family members or friends, or simply be engaging in personal activities unrelated to their work. It may be worth keeping in mind that if you approach your psychologist when they are with others, it will only be natural that those with your psychologist are likely to ask “who is that” after you have left.

Use These Encounters as Opportunities for Reflection

Seeing your psychologist outside of the therapy room can sometimes bring up unexpected feelings or thoughts. Use your response as an opportunity for self-reflection. Jot down any feelings or questions that arise and bring them to your next session. It’s a great chance to explore how you relate to your therapist and how you’re progressing in your personal journey.
