Cara Mckinstry

Cara has been a Clinical Psychologist for the past eight years. She has experience working in different settings including public and private hospital inpatient and outpatient clinics, and private practice.

Cara has also worked in different settings across the country, recently returning from the Northern Territory. She has experience working with adolescence and adults. She has assisted people with depression, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), grief, ADHD and women during the perinatal period.

She has experience and a passion for working with Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), supporting people to develop skills to manage intense emotions and improve their interpersonal relationships. Cara works from a person-centred approach and enjoys connecting with people creating a strong therapeutic relationship built on trust, honesty and respect. Cara believes this is a great foundation to go on to support people to work towards achieving their goals, and ultimately build their life worth living.

Alongside DBT Cara also uses other evidence-based therapies to support people to work towards their goals. These include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), for PTSD.

Cara is committed to continually growing and developing as a psychologist, keeping up to date with evidenced-based practice and remaining open to feedback and learning. She understands the importance of being non-judgmental and validating in order to support people to understand their experience, before going on to create desired changes.
