How Do You Know If You Have ADHD?

ADHD and diagnosis

ADHD, or the full name Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is a clinical neurodevelopmental disorder (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). This means symptoms are present across a developmental lifespan, from childhood to adulthood. There are three types of ADHD: Inattentive, Hyperactive/Impulsive, or Combined (Inattentive and Hyperactive/Impulsive). Below is a simplified table of some of the signs of each type of ADHD:

Inattentive TypeHyperactive/Impulsive TypeCombined Type
*Difficulty maintaining attention and focus on tasks.
*Time and self-disorganization, such as difficulties with scheduling and planning activities.
*Difficulty initiating or following through with tasks.
*Difficulty completing mundane tasks, such as administration or chores.
*Forgetfulness, even with reminders.
*Restlessness, often could look like fidgeting with feet or hands.
*Difficulty remaining seated for a long period of time.
*Acting impulsively or recklessly, such as doing high adrenaline activities or spending excessive amounts of money.
*Difficulty with quiet activities.
*Interrupting others in conversations or finishing someone’s sentence.
*You present with both types of symptoms across the developmental lifespan.

Assessment and Diagnosis:

If you think you meet some of the above signs of ADHD, it may be worthwhile to consider seeking a formal ADHD assessment with a psychologist or psychiatrist. You can be diagnosed with ADHD by a psychologist or psychiatrist. Often, doctors do not diagnose ADHD as it falls under the category of mental health. It might also be worth reading our blog on why self diagnosis is never a good idea.

The difference being assessed by a psychiatrist is that they can prescribe medication as they are medically trained, but psychologists cannot. Recommendations made in the report by psychiatrists often only include medication options. However, as psychologists do not prescribe medication, recommendations in their report include psychological strategies or other practical strategies to help manage ADHD. Both options are helpful ways to manage ADHD.

If you are interested in seeking an assessment for ADHD with psychologists, The Centre for Clinical Psychology in Melbourne offers ADHD assessments. Book an appointment today by calling 03 9077 0122 or visiting https://ccp.net.au/booking/
